Our Story
During early 2013 Seth and Joe (future co-founders of Simply Coding) were working together at a company they started discussing how important it was for them to have learned how to code. They were both very amazed that all throughout high school and college not once were they presented with a formal opportunity to learn computer science. Joe become very persistent on the idea to run a summer camp that coming summer teaching real website development to kids.
Finally in that same summer, Seth agreed and called on their old high school to provide them a computer lab. Next, we needed kids – this was actually the easy part. Because Joe is the 9th of 12 siblings, and at that time had over 60 nieces and nephews, we had a built in audience. They knew nothing and weren’t all that interested in learning code (ha) but their parents promised they would be there every week to let us test our curriculum and teaching skills. Let’s just say it was incredible and Simply Coding was born from that experience.
From there Simply Coding has grown to serve hundreds of thousands of students every year through after school programs, public and charter school curriculum, online at home, summer camps, troubled youth centers, and much more! The process hasn’t changed. We pay attention to how our students react to the lesson and use that modify and edit our courses. We see right in front of our eyes how they negotiate our lessons and where they go first when getting on a computer.
With our background in the business world we marry the two needs to help your child have the skills to be confident in their place with technology! Just check out this video series we did. Your son or daughter will learn how to code and we’ll also teach them how to present their code in their own portfolio to gain an advantage in the real world.
Our Mission
Think about the job you have right now and the details of how it gets done. Were those details or even your job around 5 years ago, 10 years ago? There was not a degree offered in college to prepare Seth, Joe or Dustin for their first companies they would own. The need was created through emerging technology and a changing consumer market. But at the foundation of those companies were sound computer algorithms, unchanging technology logic and a lot of programming.
Technology seems to release a new ‘boom’ every six months. It can be difficult to understand how to get involved and start contributing. Always keep in mind that the foundation of good business principles and (in technology) sound computer logic with remain the same.
Simply Coding’s mission is to prepare youth with the core principles of how all software is created so they can feel confident and be able to contribute to technology of the future.
Simply Coding’s pathway will help youth learn to code and understand those founding computer principles. They will understand how computers make decisions. The pathway does this through teaching them Keyboarding, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Python and Java. By learning the core coding principles in these languages students will be able to handle tasks thrown at them in any current or future language. They will have the confidence that they know how to read computer code and complete new challenges.
